I figured I'd at least have someone to shoot the bull with during my evening meals. I dined alone at a four-top on the first four nights and had to deal with inquisitive looks and pitiful glances. "You're alone?" my waiter asked me the first night, looking slightly confused. I endured the same question from the headwaiter before asking him to check to see if anyone else was supposed to be at my table. He informed me that I was to be dining with a fellow solo traveler who decided not to show.
Time in port is really flexible when you’re solo
The exploratory nature of the excursion fostered a social environment for everyone in the group, leading to a fun afternoon of conversation, diving, and snorkeling. By the end of the week I had a group of five other passengers to hang out with onboard. From evenings in the Promenade to sunny afternoons on the pool deck, it was a blast. I certainly did not expect to meet such a fun group of people so easily as a solo cruiser. Additionally, you'll want to gravitate toward activities where you and your fellow cruisers can cut loose, act silly and use teamwork to form bonds; anything that requires you to participate is key.
Dining “alone” can be fun!
Since I was working, took the cruise alone so I could focus on reporting. But I learned that cruising solo is no small feat, and I left with plenty of tips in mind that could help others who might be thinking of boarding a cruise ship alone. As soon as I boarded Independence of the Seas for my first solo cruise, I quickly realized that you are never truly alone on a cruise ship. There are thousands of passengers and crew members all around you, so it’s never too hard to strike up a conversation. In the end, my solo cruise experiences could not have been more different than I initially imagined. I ended the two cruises with new friends and memories made throughout the Caribbean.

It was a great chance to meet locals, learn more about Belfast and also to meet fellow guests. Cruising alone doesn’t mean cruising and not speaking to anyone – there are plenty of ways to meet new people onboard Disney Cruise ships. That’s partly why booking a pre- or post-cruise hotel stay is more expensive (not including ship-to-hotel-to-airport transfers); the room is bigger.
For instance, Silversea Cruises provides an elegant dining experience where solo guests can mingle and partake in gourmet meals in a group setting. Cruise lines such as Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Holland America offer different experiences, amenities, and solo traveler programs. You are not limited to just mass-market sailings, even luxury cruise lines offer solo rates (which typically offer fewer people onboard). However, according to Cruise Critic, some cruise ships have solo cabins that are meant for just one person, though it's not common. Cunard Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Celebrity Cruises are just a few of the cruise lines that have ships with solo cabins, Cruise Critic reports.

No matter what ship you are on, there will be a ton of activities for solo cruisers to join in on and even win big, from karaoke and pool games to dance-offs and bellyflop competitions. Not that I have anything against dining on big cruise ships with a table of all couples. But on cruise ships, if I want to be sociable, it’s with other solo travelers or just pals traveling together. Solo travelers can enhance their cruise experience by strategically selecting shore excursions and networking with other solo cruisers. This way, they discover new destinations and connect with like-minded individuals. Many cruise lines cater to singles by offering social dining tables where guests can meet and enjoy meals, facilitating connections and shared experiences.

As we queue in line for the ATM, I’ll ask if they’ll watch my back as I use the machine. Using an ATM in a port (doesn’t matter where in the world) does have some risks. With no one to watch your back, you have to be extra aware of your surroundings as well as discreetly using your PIN and pocketing your new money. Because the currency exchange commission is another source of revenue for the cruise line, they always recommend changing currency with them rather than ashore. I’m firmly convinced that four eyes are better than two when exploring a new city. Make sure to say that you don’t want your next table near that other table.
What's the difference between solo and singles cruises?
Are you taking a train or several trains in Europe before or after your cruise? As a solo, you must be prepared to lift your luggage up three or four steep steps to board. Then you have to figure out how to hoist your luggage into the overhead bin. But if you reserve a single room at a hotel in Europe and expect something the size of your typical double room in a hotel in America, it really doesn’t exist. And of course, should you get lost and miss the All Aboard time, your ship will depart without you.

If that's your intention, it's possible -- if not likely -- that you'll go unnoticed. There are usually tons of places to hide, including libraries, Internet cafes and off-the-beaten-path lounges. I also learned that booking excursions can also be an easy way to mingle with fellow passengers. In St. Thomas I reserved the Discover Scuba excursion, which took ten guests to an island off the coast of St. Thomas to learn the basics of scuba diving.

(O.K., now I'm just confusing myself.) Any way you look at it, people choose to cruise alone for a variety of reasons. One woman I met onboard had just broken up with her boyfriend the night before and chose to take the trip anyway. (Kudos to her!) Another fellow passenger said he simply woke up one morning and decided to book a trip, but none of his friends could afford to join him.
This became “my” table for the duration of the cruise and was a highlight of my trip. At the first port of call, I try to find a local bakery or chocolate shop and bring back a sweet treat for the front desk people. If there isn’t a shop ashore, even a box of candy from the gift shop is a nice gesture. And they’ll remember you if you ever need anything for your stateroom. Traveling solo is not a dreaded condition nor should it be perceived that way. But since you will be in the minority of cruisers, be prepared for the Snoop Sisters or Hercule Poirot lines of questioning.
The cruise line is starting to see more bookings, Rubén A. Rodríguez, president of MSC Cruises USA, told USA TODAY in an email. I've traveled by myself in the past, but this was the first time I'd ever gone on a cruise alone. Before my cruises, I was feeling nervous about what it would be like to go on a cruise alone. We wouldn’t suggest paying double just to get a few more points, but know that if you end up doing it, you can get a benefit. You’ll need to check the specific terms of your cruise line’s program to see if they offer the double points. For example, when I’m solo I know I tend to be a day-activity person and head to bed or back to my room come evening.
This creates a friendly environment where new friendships can be formed. Norwegian Cruise Line is renowned for their studio staterooms catering to solo cruisers, which removes the single supplement fee. Royal Caribbean also provides studio staterooms designed for solo travelers, ensuring value and comfort without the additional cost of single supplements. Cruises for solo travelers aboard Silversea don't include "single" cabins.
People will exchange information about the cruise, destinations and related topics. On a cruise, many passengers are open to meeting new people and will look out for each other. Whether if it’s at the slot machines or the blackjack tables, other passengers will usually be nice and in a good mood. If you like to gamble, then you will definitely meet some new people in the casino. Throughout the duration of the cruise, you’ll usually seem the same people in the casino.

Many cruise lines organize hosted social events specifically for single travelers. For example, some cruises feature cocktail receptions that allow singles to mingle in a relaxed setting. Royal Caribbean caters to individuals exploring the seas independently with a range of single staterooms onboard select ships. These accommodations include interior and balcony options, providing a comfortable retreat without worrying about additional fees for traveling alone. Several cruise lines offer solo cruise rates if you plan to go on a cruise alone.
Planning ahead by bringing entertainment meant that I was never bored, even while sitting alone on many occasions. Having familiar forms of media—whether it’s your favorite songs or an old movie—with you can also be a comforting touch to a lonely cruise. That way, I had all my favorites downloaded for days that I chose not to buy WiFi, or needed some extra activity. Bringing entertainment along with you is another great way to amuse yourself and stave off loneliness. Additionally, having WiFi helps provide entertainment for the boring moments of traveling alone. When first I realized I would have the opportunity to travel to the Mediterranean—but I would have to do it alone—I wasn't sure if that would be a good fit for me.
